Have you ever noticed those times when you are between parts of your life? Like times in your car when you are by yourself and between where you are going and where you are coming from? Or, that time just before you fall asleep at night, tired from your day, but not yet asleep? Or you’re in your morning shower, when you have finished the business of showering and you allow the water to embrace you, leaning into it for a few stolen seconds before you have to get on with your day?
Most of the times we don’t notice or think about these pauses in our life. Increasingly, though, I find these in-between moments to be quite precious. They allow me to shake off my persona and who I am in relation to everything and everyone else, and I get to be someone who is simply driving or falling asleep or someone standing in the shower. No pressures. No expectations. Just a couple of breaths where I can imagine the possibilities of the next moment without worry or attachments.
Sounds a little Zen, I know, or, maybe a little corny. But I think there is something in these in-between moments that restores us. And don’t we find ourselves in that same place when we suffer loss in life or when we are really sick or when something miraculous happens to us where we are so full of something lovely like a first love. I think these moments are when we are really free. We chase after this feeling of freedom through our activities and busyness, but I think what we are really after is in those quiet in-between moments when we remember how to really take a breath and truly see what is all around us.
As someone who works in the science world, I think a lot of our scientific discoveries are made in those in-between moments. Those “eureka” and “epiphany” moments most probably happen during those in-between times. As a writer, I know that it is during those moments when the story comes to me and my writer's block disappears into thin air.
These moments are like breadcrumbs, scattered throughout our lives and leading us along a path back to ourselves.
Here is to our in-between moments! May they forever be part of our lives!
