I was inspired to write Dark Matter: The Secret Revealed, the first novel in The Butterfly Prophecy Series, by books like Marion Zimmer Bradley’s, The Mists of Avalon and Stephenie Meyer’s, Twilight Series. I chose novels, from an early age, to learn about human relationships and to explore what it meant to be female. Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Margaret Atwood and Doris Lessing took me into the female psyche and revealed that the struggle to discover our power as women is waged both from within and without; and, for women, there is a catch! We have not yet had the opportunity to fully realize what the world may look like if it was truly created in our own image!
What matters to our fair sex, and how we wield power when we have it is part and parcel of our experience as women in the world. It affects how we lead and how we love. I wanted to create a world in Dark Matter that allowed my heroine to explore, both from within and without, the full extent of her personal power. I wanted to take a journey and discover, as a writer, unencumbered by the limitations of the real world, what a strong young woman, who had suffered tremendous loss and who was still not in possession of herself, could do if she was given the opportunity to truly know herself and to lead.
In Dark Matter, the heroine, Belinda Benson, is an immortal healer who has lost her memory. She has lived many centuries; however, she cannot remember her origins—the time when she was a mortal. She is afraid to discover her past, but compelled to do so when the love of her life, Damien Garant, a mortal, becomes ill and will die if he does not receive emila.
To discover emila, Belinda must journey through time to the sixth century, modern-day Isle of Man, where she was once Cerridwen, a High Priestess of the Isle of the Mists, deeply in love with the knight, Sir Gareth, in King William’s Court. It is here where she must face her greatest enemy, Sir Mordecai, who is also a knight in King William’s Court and Sir Gareth’s brother. He will stop at nothing to destroy her and all that she holds dear.
The Butterfly Prophecy Series, beginning with Dark Matter, is ultimately a visionary narrative of what a world deeply influenced by an insightful and conscientious woman of power can become. It is equally a timeless and profound love story that celebrates the beauty and messiness of giving your heart away to another only to find it never leaves you when you give it with such abiding love.
